🍅 Classic Tomato Sandwich Recipe
đź•’ Prep Time: 5 minutes
🍽️ Servings: 1 sandwich (can be scaled up)
âś… Ingredients:
- 2 slices white sandwich bread (soft and fresh – not toasted)
- 1–2 ripe tomatoes (beefsteak or heirloom preferred)
- 2–3 tablespoons mayonnaise (Duke’s, Hellmann’s, or homemade)
- Salt, to taste (kosher or flaky sea salt recommended)
- Black pepper, freshly ground, to taste
Optional Add-Ins:
- Garlic powder, a light sprinkle
- Fresh basil leaves, torn or whole
- Dash of hot sauce or a drizzle of olive oil (for a twist)
🔪 Instructions:
- Prepare the tomatoes:
- Wash and slice the tomatoes into ÂĽ-inch thick slices.
- Lay the slices on a plate or paper towel and lightly season with salt and pepper. Let sit for a couple of minutes to draw out some juices and enhance flavor.
- Prep the bread:
- Spread mayonnaise generously on one side of each slice of bread. Make sure you reach all the way to the edges.
- Assemble the sandwich:
- Layer the seasoned tomato slices evenly over one slice of the bread (on the mayo side).
- If using garlic powder or fresh basil, sprinkle or place them over the tomatoes now.
- Close and press:
- Top with the second slice of bread, mayo side down.
- Gently press the sandwich together to help the tomato juices mingle with the mayo and bread.
- Serve immediately:
- Cut in half (diagonally, if you’re a traditionalist).
- Enjoy right away so the bread stays tender but not soggy.
đź’ˇ Tips:
- Bread matters: Soft white sandwich bread is traditional, but feel free to try brioche or sourdough for a twist.
- Tomatoes must be ripe: Peak-summer tomatoes make all the difference.
- Don’t skimp on salt: It unlocks the tomato’s full flavor.
