Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients
For the beef & gravy:
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
Salt & pepper, to taste
2 tbsp butter or oil for cooking
For the mashed potatoes:
2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 tbsp butter
½ cup milk (or more for creaminess)
Salt & pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Make the mashed potatoes
Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a pot of salted water.
Bring to a boil and cook until tender (about 15 minutes).
Drain, then mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Keep warm.
2. Cook the beef
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter (or heat oil).
Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes.
Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
Add ground beef, season with salt & pepper, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
3. Make the gravy
Sprinkle the flour over the cooked beef and stir for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
Slowly add beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
Stir in Worcestershire sauce and thyme (if using).
Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened to a gravy consistency. Adjust seasoning.
4. Assemble the dish
Place a scoop of mashed potatoes on each plate.
Spoon the beef and gravy mixture generously over the top.
5. Serve hot
Perfect with a side of green beans, peas, or roasted carrots.
